Warcry: Gnarlwood Terrain #4

Hasn’t been a lot of activity on the blog this year. Some hobby has been occurring (very slowly) but I haven’t had the motivation to post about it… till now!

You may remember at the beginning of the year I had a spurt of Warcry terrain building. Assembling the terrain that came in the Warcry: Heart of Ghur boxed game. I even started painting it, but admittedly I screwed up slightly* and that knocked the motivation out of me to complete it in a timely fashion.

A keen eyed reader may have noticed that the title of this post has subtly changed from those previous posts. That is because I also bought the follow on boxes to Heart of Ghur; Sundered Fate, Bloodhunt, and Nightmare Quest. Yes, I fully admit the GW FOMO plan worked a treat on me there. The good intension was to build and paint a box before getting the next box. That failed way back at the start of the year, and since May/June I’ve had a forest of sprues sat in boxes. Well, until recently that is…

I have to admit that I have surprised myself at the sudden surge of motivation for Warcry hobbying. Its side-lined my excitement for the slightly delayed Epic revamp in the form of Legions Imperialis (I’ll blog about my epic hobbying at some point). I now have the whole set of 4 boxes* worth of Gnarlwood terrain assembled. Plus an additional terrain piece which fits in with the Gnarlwood theme in my opinion, the Megadroth Remains (EG link). And…

…its got paint on it! I had spent some time with the Heart of Ghur terrain back at the start of the year, so the plan here was the bring the rest of the SunderedFate/Bloodhunt/NightmareQuest/MegadrothRemains terrain up to the a similar standard using rattle can sprays, and then continue on from there with the whole set in a batch process. I used 5 colours in total, a bit excessive but the cans have been knocking around for a while and so I didn’t have to buy anything specially for this process. The order was…

  • Army Painter Black, general all over black primer coat. (AP sprays EG link)
  • Army Painter Alien Purple, shadowy areas and trees.
  • Army Painter Angel Green, lower portions of all terrain, and the bamboo parts.
  • Army Painter Uniform Grey, stone and bones.
  • Army Painter Fur Brown, treated this a bit like a zenithal layer, but not on the stone.

Picture below shows the whole set of terrain. You can spot most of the original Heart of Ghur terrain from the slightly different colours. The very red tree to the right of the ziggurat, which was the furthest progressed piece having had rattlecan, airbrush, and oil washes used on it. You can see the watch tower just below it with the grey skull and green bamboo platform. The other easy to spot piece is the platform/tree/skull just below the ziggurat.

Same stuff, slightly different angle.

I finished off my black and purple cans doing the above, so while I was looking to replace the black primer – my go to colour primer usually – I spotted the TT Combat spray cans (EG link) are much cheaper, so I have bought a couple of colours to see what they are like (black, strigoi flesh, & one of the darker browns).

Until next time.
